These fingerless mittens are knit in the round. The pattern is written with DPNs in mind but circular needles could be used if preferred. A leaf design runs up the side of the hand and is set against a reverse stocking stitch background. The pattern for the leaf design is both written out in full and charted.
You will need:
• 100g/ ??? yards Aran/Worsted weight yarn
• 3.25 mm/US size 3 Double Pointed Needles (DPNs)
• 2 stitch markers
• Small amount of waste yarn
• Needle for sewing in ends
Abbreviations: P2tog Purl two stitches together

Mitten Cuffs
Cast on: 49 stitches, arranged over 3 DPNs as follows:
Needle 1 = 15 stitches Needle 2 = 20 stitches Needle 3 = 14 stitches
Join in the round, taking care not to twist the stitches.
Set up row: [K1, P2, K2, P2] repeat to end (7 repeats)
Cuff pattern:
Row 1: [K1, P2, C1R, P2] repeat to end
Rows 2: [K1, P2, K1, P2] repeat to end
Rows 3: [K1, P2, K1, P2] repeat to end
Rows 4: [K1, P2, K1, P2] repeat to end
Rows 5 – 24: Repeat the above pattern 5 more times. Finish the cuffs with 1 more row, placing one marker after 18 stitches and then a second marker 14 stitches after the first – the leaf pattern will be knitted within the 14 stitches between the markers.
Row 25: [K1, P2, C1R, P2] repeat 6 times, K1, P2, C1R, P1 (one stitch should be left unknitted at the end of the round).
Mitten Hand
Rearrange the stitches on the needles slightly – move the last (unknitted) stitch of the round from needle 3 to needle 1 so it becomes the first stitch of the round for the hand of the mitten:
Needle 1 = 16 stitches Needle 2 = 20 stitches Needle 3 = 13 stitches

Mitten Trim
Now that that pattern is complete, rearrange the stitches again by taking the first stitch of the round from needle 1 and putting it on needle 3 – this will make the trim pattern align with the cuff:
Needle 1 = 15 stitches Needle 2 = 20 stitches Needle 3 = 14 stitches
To finish the hand, repeat the cuff pattern:
Row 1: [K1, P2, K2, P2] repeat to end (7 repeats)
Row 2: [K1, P2, C1R, P2] repeat to end
Rows 3/4/5: [K1, P2, K1, P2] repeat to end
Row 6: [K1, P2, C1R, P2] repeat to end
Rows 7: Cast off in pattern
Thumb
Transfer the 15 stitches from the waste yarn and distribute them over 3 DPNs. Join the yarn and starting from where the thumb meets the hand:
Row 1: Purl all stitches, then pick up and purl 1 stitch from the body of the mitten (16 stitches in total).
Rows 2 and 3: Purl all stitches
Row 3: P2tog, P12, P2tog (14 stitches)
Repeat Rows 1 – 7 of the mitten trim as shown above
Sew in the ends and knit another one!
CIR and C1L instructions
Using a cable needle is tricky when you already have DPNs, so I’d suggest trying a cabling-without-needles technique, which is slightly worrying if you’ve not done it before - it involves moments where stitches are just hanging free, not on the needles!
C1R –Cable 1 Right
Creates a stitch that leans towards the right like this: /
Slide your right-hand needle into the front of the second stitch on the left-hand needle
Pull the left hand needle out of the first and second stitches – the second stitch will be fine as it is on the right-hand needle, but the first stitch will hang in mid-air.
Calmly take the left-hand needle and pick up the stitch floating in mid-air.
Transfer the stitch on the right needle to the left-hand one and then knit the two stitches as normal.
C1L – creates a stitch that leans towards the left like this: \
Slide your right-hand needle into the back of the second stitch on the left-hand needle
M1 – Make 1
Use the right-hand needle to pick up the yarn from between the stitches on the row below
Bring the yarn up and place it over the left-hand needle as shown – make sure the yarn is over the needle in the direction shown in the picture, or you will end up with a hole in your work!
Purl the stitch.
